City Love

Every now and then I get overwhelmed with love for the city I live in. The only other place this has happened to me is London, which will always be half of my heart. Chicago is occupying the other half. Perhaps it's because it is autumn now and there's a whiff of smoke and a nip of chill in the air. I used to hate autumn as a child because it signified going back to school. Now it is battling into first place for my affection. Chicago's full of secrets and excitement. It's a cool place to live.

I am madly in love with New York but maybe that is because I have never lived there, just visited now and again.

EmmaK- I like NY a lot, too, but I definitely wouldn't be able to live there. Great atmosphere but after a while it's too much.

Anonymous- The first pic was taken near the Merchandise Mart building right at the Chicago River. That bridge that's up is a historical monument that still functions.

The second photo is of Couch Place, a huge alley that I walk by every day going to and from work.

The third is of my favorite park with the Newberry Library in the background.

Chicago's lovely. When you're not freezing your balls off.

Okay - Couch Place looks exactly like a really cool laneway in Melbourne that resembles a cool laneway in Barcelona. Only there are no cool little bars or cafes. Otherwise though, spitting image.

Lee- Haha, I think I've been to BOTH of those cool laneways.

This alleyway is behind a famous theater now called the Oriental where currently "Wicked" is playing. It once was the Iroquois Theater but in 1903 there was a massive fire that trapped 602 people (many of them children) who died along with the building. It is particularly sad because the building was loudly advertized as "fire proof." Apparently, it is quite haunted but I haven't ever been inside, just the alleyway in back.

Great photos Kathryn. Unfortunately, I've never been to Chicago, except for a few hours at O'Hare.

Hi Pierre- a lot of people pass through ORD but fail to see one of the best cities in the States. If you get a chance to someday you should definitely check Chicago out. It's Good Stuff.
